I'm sincerely saddened to learn of Mr. Riley's passing. I have fond memories of Don, (as I used to call him) from the Class of '79. Not meant in disrespect, but in my own brand of defiance. I'm certain I gave him a few of his early grey hairs, but he was ever a constant for discipline. I wasn't a 'bad' kid by a long shot, though I know I pushed him and yet I had great admiration and the utmost respect for Don. I can still picture him in the halls with his salt and pepper sportcoat... For Senior-teach Day, we had lots of great teachers to emulate, but the position I wanted to take up was that of Don's. I hope that I did well in his eyes. I wish that I could tell him how much I value his influence that he had on my upbringing. I think he must have know that, as he simply signed my yearbook, "Joe, stay out of trouble, Don"... To read of his accomplishments after retirement is just spectacular; that seems a testament to his great dedication and surely must give great pride to family and friends. Thank you "Mr. Riley", for all you've done.

Don Riley and I stood together on the top Of Allen Mountain on July 19, 1999. Allen Mountain was the last of the Adirondack 46 high peaks for Don to climb. We made Don’s becoming an Adirondack Forty-Sixer especially memorable: got lost twice (adding two more hours to an already long day); heavy morning and afternoon rains; a little hypothermia at the top (while taking the necessary pictures of Don’s special moment); and Don’s watch fell off somewhere along the way. Later we would share similar experiences in places like Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon. Don was philosophical about our hiking adventures -- good or bad -- and saw in all of them this lesson to live by: The first step you take to do something different and challenging is always the hardest one, but you will never be sorry you took it. I will miss Don's company.

I first saw Don at orientation at GCHS when I started there as an SNT some years ago. He looked very stern and I thought he was a principal I would avoid. I was totally wrong....he quickly became my favorite principal of all time..There was no one like Don. Even tho I haven't seen him in over 10 years I shall always remember him...his wonderful and caring way with our students and his visits to just chat in the Health Office...God Bless His Soul.

Mr. Riley had a way about him. His walk, his clothes, he facial expressions as if he knew far more and cared far more than he would ever let on. He was firm but kind, quiet but effective, mild mannered but a force to be contended with, and though not a phrase at the time, he "always had your back". It was an honor and a pleasure to have known him, to have worked with him...and if I am not mistaken, he was the administrator on the committee when we first discussed and implemented "Primetime"...the after Sr Ball event...just one of his legacies. Thank you Mr. Riley, for impacting so many lives! As my thoughts drift to memories of you..I see you walking down the hallway in that forever suit...always with a piece of paper in hand, always on a mission. Good memories

So sorry to hear about Mr. Riley. He was a great man and had such a try sense of humor. I will always remember our trips to the Adirondacks. Getting up @ the crack of dawn and seeing the fog over the lake, bacon cooking and waiting for our day to begin. Fishing, water skiing (which he had much patience since I didn't get up many times). Loved seeing the black bears @ the dump. Great memories that will never be forgotten.

Mr. Riley had a great understanding of his students and their needs. During his tenure, Mr. Riley made the special education program at Gates Chili High School an outstanding model of success. His understanding, dedication, love of challenge, and ever powerful presence were instrumental in developing a terrific special education program. Mr. Riley's great sense of humor also allowed him to enjoy student antics, though the students never knew that.
