My fondest memories of Aunt Dorothy was when her and Uncle Tom (and family) would come to our house and stay for several days. I especially remember them playing cards all night with my mom and dad. They would laugh so hard it would wake me up. Aunt Dorothy was a special Aunt. She was a leader in her generation. She led by example by going to college and getting a PHD. Aunt Dorothy’s ambition and academic achievement was a role model to my own mother Eileen Scragg – who decided to go to college after starting her family. Laughing and inspirational is how I will remember my Aunt Dot.

She was an inspiration and a leader. She set high standards which gained my respect. The nursing profession has been changed because of her example and her life.

Class of 1981. My best memory included our whole class's Senior Prank (which was expected). On Sunday we filled her office knee high with inflated balloons and put the patient dummy in "Aunt Dot's" chair. The next morning as we were taking an exam, we heard a shriek. Then she appeared at the door to the classroom smiling and grateful we hadn't forgotten to prank her. We inflated the balloons at "Lena's Lair!" Know you're smiling in heaven!

I was so sorry to hear about Mrs. Whittingham's passing. I wanted to send my condolences. Dorothy was very understanding and helpful to my Mom, Fran Otis who worked as an Assistant Professor with Dorothy at RWC for many years. My Mom who passed away in 2006 thought the world of Dorothy. She suffered through illness (heart) for most of her adult life and loved teaching at RWC. She endured many surgeries and hospitalizations during her time teaching at RWC and used to say how wonderful Dorothy was through it all. She was a true friend and my Mom thought the world of her. Another angel has gone to heaven to watch over us. Blessings to all of Dorothy's family.

Dorothy was an inspiration to me in many ways. We kept in touch from time to time once I left RWC. Memories of her personal and professional influence which are vivid in my mind include: patience with me as a novice student in clinicals; support and personal contact when I was involved in nursing in Haiti; and interest in having me join the nursing faculty using my missionary nursing experience and background. She was one who always stimulated me to think out of the box. I thank God for her impact on my life.

Mrs. Whittingham... what an honor it was to have her in my life at the time I did. She carefully counseled as I considered changing majors, changing colleges, and had that twinkle in her eye as she watched me make the decision that was right for me. She had a compassion for nursing and others that was very special and meant the world to me. RWC was lucky to have her.
