I am so sorry to hear this news about Tom, mostly sorry for Cheryl and their children. We were best friends a long time ago, but drifted apart once we married and started to raise our families. No words can express my sorrow for your family, he was a great friend. Jeff Davies

Happy Birthday, Daddy! I was going to check on your magazine subscriptions and had stuff in my Amazon cart for you this year, but now all I can send is this letter. The timing of death is never what we expect, but it is not for us to decide.
Thank you for being my dad, Daddy.
You are the strongest person I have ever met. As a kid, no matter what medical issue you faced, you took it on with such bravery that I never worried about what would happen. You were like Superman, and you made us feel like you could handle anything. You have had to suffer through life more than most people ever will, and yet you fought through every obstacle with strength and humor. One of the biggest things you taught me is that laughter is the best medicine—and you would know best because you had so many to take! I miss hearing your laugh, but I know that you would want us to keep making jokes and laughing through hard times.
There are so many memories I will never forget. Roller blading, bike rides, walks by the canal…I remember when I was anxious about school you would take me on Sundays to go look for deer or to walk by the canal, and you would help me let go of the anxiety before the new week. Your stories always made me laugh and forget about whatever I was worried about. You were always so positive about life and about me, and you always said I was good enough even when I felt like I wasn’t.
I am so blessed to have seen such a perfect example of love between a husband and wife. You had such a deep and genuine relationship with Mommy, and you took care of each other so well. Not many people get to experience that kind of love, but I was able to see firsthand what it means to have a true partner in life like you had with Mommy. You loved her and us so much, and we will always have that even though you are not here physically. I know you are watching over her now, so please help give her the strength to keep going on her own. Healing is possible, and God will always make good out of any situation.
I think I remember you saying that as a kid you would just go to church on your own, just walking over to St. John’s for church…I think about that a lot here in Korea and every Sunday, I walk to church on my own just like you did. Being Catholic has become very important to me now, and I am grateful that you instilled that in me. I pray that you are at eternal peace now and that we will find peace knowing that we will join you there someday.
I was never able to celebrate holidays and birthdays these last years, but I am thankful for you and Mommy for accepting my decision to live so far away. Distance isn’t easy, but I know that we have just one last long distance to travel until we meet again.
I miss and love you so much, Daddy.

Tom has always been my hero. I admired your care free way, as letting nothing get in your way you just took everything in stride. You have endured so much but you had so much strength and will power.
We will always love you, and miss you!!
Prayers for Cheryl, Leanne and Thom’s
Love, Your sister Joanie

Tom was my best friend in my late adolescence and a fine partner in many youthful adventures. His spirit beams on, gently yet brightly.
