I had the pleasure of working with Tom during our years at NEA of NY. He was always the consummate gentleman who cared deeply about the public schools, the students who attended them and, most importantly, the professionals who worked in them as they tried to do what was best for those students. He was a mentor for many union leaders and staff members and he guided them in ways about which they could always feel proud. Tom's standards were high and he never, ever failed to meet them in all of his dealings with employees and with members. He will be sorely missed.

Sorry to learn of Tom's passing. I worked for Tom at NEA/NY starting in 1984 until he retired. I was happy he selected me for that job. I know Tom's family was so important to him. I remember him coming into the office each morning usually with a smile and going to work on the phones and checking in with the other guys in the office. I remember he would eat his lunch at his desk and save his paper bags. I remember his beautiful sweaters and how he always dressed quite snappily. I remember the day the stockmarket tanked in October 1987 and he had a terrible worried look on his face. He was not happy that day. I remember he was always happy when he would hear from his children who were traveling quite a bit in those days and off at college I believe. I remember Tom predicting that the world would become quite divided. He talked about how we would become a society of "the haves vs. the have-nots". He also predicted the cost of rising health care way back in 1984. Again, I am sorry for your loss. 83 seems young to me now. I am glad I had the chance to know and work with your husband and your Dad. Sincerely, Janet Collamer
